In my brief i stated that i wanted to look into how time effects a material or object, and to discover new ways to show the layering and deterioration..
I started by layering, slowing adding colour as well as different texture to a large A1 canvas, i then started to rip, burn and slowly disintegrate the layers using many different techniques. i found that that particular experiment was extremely successful is clearly should the ideas of deterioration and showed the many steps and layers that had been created. i found that at the beginning i didn't like the burnt colours created from exposing the paper the the flame but it slowly grew on me as i found that the dark colours brought out the more vibrant lighter colours found on the last layer of the piece.
using the colour of the burned paper as inspiration i tried recreating in my series 4 knit workshop and chose a colour i felt very similar the a burnt charcoal shade, i then distressed the material attempting to create the same effect as the burnet paper.
i then chose to look as basso and brooks one off piece which was more digitally influenced.
i wanted to bring in the colours that i has sourced from my visual research, i then incorporated the inspiration from basso and brooks piece and incorporated my own digital photography in the back while adding my knit work that i had distressed, i wanted to take the idea of using photography while adding brightly coloured threads into the mix, it then started playing around with print out of pin ups while creating a deteriorated effect with paint while disrupting the images with thread linking to the colour scheme i had taken in a previous photo.
i wanted to add text into my work so i started layering pages from old worn books keeping with the theme of time and how this effects the pages as they were extremely delicate. i then added masking tape and paint as well as dye.. this is one of my favorite pages out of my sketchbook as i really enjoy the idea of incorporating text into my work and i think that the worn down look is something that i felt came out successfully.
knit work i dyed responding to the page above.
i felt that i have utilized my sketchbook well and that i want to use hand knit more for future projects, i felt that digital has helped a lot in created a more unique look to my work and that taking that workshop has help alot technique wise. i felt the flow from the beginning of my project has been smooth and i was able to carry on my ideas that i had developed at the beginning of the sampling project right through to my on project and when writing my brief i felt that i have developed throughly into this idea, however i feel that i can come back to this idea and still be able to bring different approaches.
